We go through a little back and forth here following Ellie's story and Joel's story. Joel finally wakes up and sees that Ellie is not there. He goes out looking for her taking no prisoners...well maybe a few. Ellie meanwhile makes an escape attempt and jumps out into a blizzard. If the other group doesn't get her, the cold might.
The game follows Joel as he helps escort Ellie across the United States in a post-apocalyptic time. It begins with a zombie like outbreak that leads to the disaster.
